Looking for sustainable travel? Look no further than Costa Rica.
It’s not hard to understand why Costa Rica is one of the most popular destinations for those interested in sustainable travel. As the birthplace of ecotourism, Costa Rica has long been at the forefront of environmental conservation and continues to manage its tremendous natural resources with sustainability and preservation in mind. Over 25% of its land is dedicated to protected areas, including national parks, wildlife refuges, and bio reserves. The country's diverse array of ecosystems–jungles, cloud forests, wetlands, and beaches–are carefully preserved and managed to minimize harm from tourism.
That care is great news for travelers looking to immerse themselves in nature while treading lightly on the earth. Whether you're yearning for a beach escape, an active outdoor expedition, or an adrenaline-pumping adventure, Costa Rica delivers.
Here are three destinations that will satisfy the urge for the unspoiled outdoors whether you are a beach lover, nature lover, or adventure traveler. These are just a sampling of the riches of Costa Rica. There are more beaches, national parks, and wildlife preserves than we have space for. Beach Bliss
Costa Rica is known far and wide for its glorious and unspoiled beaches. With 1,228 km of coastline and an estimated 600 beaches, the real problem will be choosing which one to visit. Here we’re focusing on the beaches of Manuel Antonio National Park. All of its beaches are surrounded by areas of abundant wildlife, which may visit while you're basking in the sun. Don't be surprised if you spot white-faced capuchin monkeys swinging through the trees or iguanas lolling on the rocks. Bird watchers will delight in the variety of species that inhabit the area, including scarlet macaws and toucans.

Playa Manuel Antonio: This strip of soft, silky sand fringed with tranquil turquoise waves is a great spot for swimming sunbathing, tide-pooling, and snorkeling. You’ll see vibrant coral reefs that shelter a vast array of marine life, from colorful fish to playful dolphins. It's the most famous beach in the park, though, so don't expect to be alone there.
Playa Espadilla: Golden sand and emerald surf--that’s what you’ll find at Playa Espadilla. You’ll also find tourists and locals alike appreciating its charm and laid-back vibe. If you like a social beach experience with vibrant shops and restaurants to accompany the stunning scenery, it’s perfect.
Playa Biesanz: A secluded spot, on a hidden cove with calm waters, Biesanz is deal for swimming and snorkeling. You can rent kayaks and snorkel gear here to explore the underwater world. The beach is surrounded by lush jungle, providing shade and a peaceful atmosphere.
Playa La Macha: For those seeking utter quiet and solitude, La Macha is the place to go. You can lie on the beach and hear nothing but the sound of the surf lapping at the shore. The wildlife viewing is also excellent.

Love the outdoors but not the beach? Center your Costa Rica visit on the otherworldly Monteverde Cloud Forest. For those who don’t know the term, a cloud forest is a rare type of rainforest found at high elevations. The high humidity and perpetual mist create unique ecosystems and biodiversity hotspots. The Monteverde Cloud Forest supports more than 2500 plant species, including vibrant orchids and towering ferns, as well as a myriad of wildlife such as howler monkeys, sloths, and the elusive Resplendent Quetzal. Here are some cloud forest activities:
Hiking and Nature Trails: There is a network of well-maintained trails here that accommodate hikers of every level. All of them lead to stunning views of the forest and provide opportunities to spot exotic wildlife.
Bird Watching: With over 400 bird species, including the Resplendent Quetzal and the Keel-Billed Toucan, Monteverde is a not-to-be-missed destination for birders.
Hanging Bridges: Explore the forest canopy up close by walking along the hanging bridges. These suspended pathways offer breathtaking views and a unique perspective of the cloud forest.
Canopy Tours and Zip Lining: For the more adventurous, canopy and zip lining are thrilling ways to explore the forest's upper reaches and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the lush landscape.
Arenal Volcano National Park

For the ultimate adventure travel experience, it’s hard to beat a live volcano. If that prospect thrills you, definitely head to Arenal, which is the most famous of Costa Rica's seven active volcanos. But don’t be afraid—Arenal has been dormant since 2010 when it ended an eruption cycle that had begun in 1968 (although it still occasionally spews out smoke and ash). Its perfectly symmetrical cone, often shrouded in mist, creates a dramatic backdrop for a wide range of outdoor adventures. The area's geothermal activity, dense rainforest, and abundant waterways provide the perfect setting for adrenaline-pumping experiences. Here are some of the most popular:
- Canyoning and Waterfall Rappelling: Experience a thrilling rush as you descend through lush canyons and rappel down cascading waterfalls.
- Whitewater Rafting: In the nearby Sarapiquí and Balsa rivers you’ll find some of the best whitewater rafting in Costa Rica. Whether you’re navigating Class II-III rapids or tackling the more challenging Class IVs, expect an adrenalin rush.
- Hiking and Lava Fields: Explore trails that lead through the rainforest to old lava fields, offering stunning views of the volcano and its surroundings as well as the opportunity to view wildlife.
- Hot Springs: After a day of adventure, unwind in the natural hot springs heated by the volcano's geothermal activity.
- Zip Lining: Soar through the treetops on exhilarating zip line courses that offer panoramic views of the volcano and the lush canopy below. Zip lining is a thrilling way to experience the rainforest from a unique vantage point.
- Hot Springs: After a day of adventure, unwind in the region's natural hot springs, which are heated by the geothermal activity of the volcano. These soothing waters provide a perfect way to relax and rejuvenate.
- Arenal Hanging Bridges: These suspended pathways offer stunning views and the chance to spot exotic birds, monkeys, and other wildlife in the forest canopy.
- Mountain Biking: The rugged terrain around Arenal is ideal for mountain biking. Trails range from easy routes through the rainforest to challenging paths up volcanic hills, providing options for all skill levels.
