Phu Quoc Island: Tropical Paradise
Phu Quoc, Vietnam's largest island, is often referred to as a tropical paradise. (See the photo above to understand why.) With its lush forests, stunning waterfalls, and pristine beaches, it’s a must-visit destination for any nature or beach lover. More than half of the island and its surrounding ocean make up a UNESCO-protected biosphere reserve, home to nearly a thousand plant species and hundreds of species of coral reef, tropical fish, and other aquatic animals.
When you see the dazzling white sand beaches, it’s easy to understand why Phu Quoc is the most popular destination in Vietnam for water sports, including jet skiing, parasailing, windsurfing, and kite surfing. Here are some of the standout beaches on the island:
- Long Beach (Bai Truong): Known for its soft sandy shores, Long Beach is ideal for watching sunsets and enjoying water sports. Its central location makes it a popular choice for tourists.
- Khem Beach is best for peace, quiet, and seclusion.
- Sao Beach (Bai Sao): Famous for its crystal-clear waters and white sand, Sao (aka Star Beach) offers swimming, snorkeling, coral reefs, and a vast array of sea life.
- Ong Lang Beach: Serene, sheltered bays carpeted with soft sand make this a great spot for a lazy family day by the ocean. If you have a hankering to go shopping, there’s a nearby strip of commercial activity to satisfy that yearning.
BTW, the Vietnamese know Phu Quoc mainly for its high-quality fish sauce and aromatic black peppers. Don’t be put off by the smell of the fish sauce—it’s very pungent. But when combined with other ingredients (like garlic, sugar, chili, and lime juice, yum) it morphs into Vietnam’s delicious signature dip, nuoc cham. Make sure to try it while you're there--it's served with almost every dish. If you’re game, you can visit a processing plant where they make this anchovy-based sauce and you can pick some up to take home. You won't regret it.
Nha Trang is known for its beaches as well as its bustling street life and markets
